Tannery Arts is a small, independent charity concerned with supporting the professional development of emerging and established artists through the provision of affordable studios, promoting their practice through opportunities to exhibit work, develop projects, generate partnerships with local authorities, private property owners and social housing organisations as well as engage in learning activities.

DE.FI.CIEN.CY brings together Polish artist Andrzej Wróblewski (1927-57), Dutch artist René Daniels (b.1950) and Belgian artist Luc Tuymans (b.1958). In the hands of these artists, ‘deficiency’ becomes a positive agent of artistic achievement. Their shared preoccupation with the failure of pictorial representation is triggered by a range of personal and political issues, and this publication demonstrates affinities and disparities between the work of the three artists, across generations and cultures.
The colour illustrations are accompanied by observations derived from Ulrich Loock’s conversations with Joanna Kordjak, Dominic van den Boogerd, and Luc Tuymans. Tuymans also discusses the selection in an interview with Anda Rottenberg. Ulrich Loock has contributed an extensive discussion of the three artists’ oeuvres.
